How a video games flow can help you let go of worries

How a video games flow can help you let go of worriesHow a video games flow can help you let go of worriesIf you are waiting to hear back after a job interview, you can try distracting yourself with a video game. A new study in Emotion found that playing video games can improve the excruciating experience of waiting for an uncertain outcome. How Tetris can be the blissful distraction worriers needInstead of filling our heads with shouldve and couldves, psychologists have found that we worriers can use flow - a state of mind where we disengage from the world with an engrossing task- to pass the time while awaiting uncertain news.University of California, Riverside, psychologist Kate Sweeny and her colleagues recruited participants to do sufficiently distracting tasks to achieve flow. In one of the studies, law school students who experienced mora flow while awaiting their bar exam results reported less worry and more positive emotions. To test how this distracting experience could be r eplicated, Sweeny recruited 290 students to play Tetris, the 1984 video game where players have to match and manipulate tiles to fit spaces into a line.Video games are perfect for flow as long as its a game that meets and slightly pushes the skill level of the player, Sweeny said. The students were told they would be ranked against one another based on physical attractiveness, and after hearing this anxiety-inducing news, they were told to play Tetris for 10 minutes. The students were given easy, challenging or adaptive levels to complete. The students in the adaptive level had the opportunity to get challenged as their skill level increased. They were the group that experienced less negative emotion and greater positive emotion, compared to other groups. The lesson from this video game test is to choose a distracting activity that rewards your efforts. You want an activity that is not going to toss you into the deep end from the beginning. With Tetris, the game slowly gets harder as tiles fall faster and shapes are no longer easy to clear. To win, you must learn which shapes work where and pay attention to where shapes fit.You can apply this lesson to other distracting activities you may take on to avoid thinking about worrying to-dos. Deep cleaning your kitchen can be challenging with hurdles of dirty dishes and moldy foods you need to clear, but it can be rewarding to know you will have a spotless kitchen as a result. We need to recognize, however, that not every video game or distracting task is going to help you achieve flow. The flow-inducing task has to be challenging but not insurmountable. It has to keep you wanting to stay engaged. Flow is most readily achieved with activities that challenge the person somewhat, but not too much have clear, achievable goals and that provide the person with feedback about how theyre doing along the way, Sweeny said.

Black Silicon Lowers Cost, Increases Efficiency for Solar

Black Silicon Lowers Cost, Increases Efficiency for Solar Black Silicon Lowers Cost, Increases Efficiency for Solar Black Silicon Lowers Cost, Increases Efficiency for SolarPhotovoltaic manufacturers are increasingly turning to black silicon, a semiconductor material with a textured surface that absorbs much more visible and infrared light compared to standard silicon solar cells. The unique energy aufsaugung and semiconducting qualities of the material make it ideal for solar cells, as well as sensors for imaging applications, for example, thermal imaging cameras. One of the biggest trends in photovoltaic manufacturing today is the adoption of black silicon, says Marcie Black, co-founder and CEO of Advanced Silicon Group, a provider of silicon nanotechnology for industrial applications.Silicon nanowire arrays based on black silicon solar cells offer higher efficiency and material cost savings. Image Advanced Silicon GroupWhen silicon undergoes chemical or stain etching, or laser proc essing, the result is a blackened surface covered with needle-like structures. Also called silicon nanowires, ansicht structures are about 10microns in height and less than 1mircon in diameter. With high absorption of both visible and infrared light and overall low reflectivity, this altered material is much more sensitive to light than a standard silicon chip.Reflectivity, which is typically about 20 percent to 30 percent for standard silicon, is reduced to about 5 percent for black silicon, meaning more light is absorbed. To maintain low reflectivity, the nanoscale features of the needles must be smaller than the wavelength of the incident light to avoid scattering. In 2016, Trina Solar, a solar panel manufacturer, announced it had achieved a new efficiency record for black silicon solar cells of 23.5 percent on a large-area, mono-crystalline, square silicon wafer.Black silicon nanotextures are preferred for their antireflection properties, since they provide low reflection over a wide range of incident angles and wavelengths of light. Processes that create these features include variations of metal-enhanced etching, reactive ion etching, and laser processing. The geometry of nanotexures can vary small changes at the nanoscale can have large impacts on performance at the macroscale. Silicon nanowire specifications such as diameter, density, and length can be customized, depending on the application. The density, taper, and the length of nanowires drastically alter the optical reflection and absorption of the module, Black says.Designing the best shape and configuration for the nanostructures requires careful consideration, such as the tradeoff between depth of nanostructures (longer nanowires) and light reflection. Obtaining cells with low reflection and high efficiency requires optimization, Black says. In general, the optimized nanostructure process depends on the details of the rest of the cell and possible module assembly processes. The nanostructure sho uld be optimized for reliability, not just efficiency.Black silicon is currently used in about 30 percent of the multi-crystalline silicon solar cell market, which is valued at about $16 billion per year. The dominant market for black silicon is photovoltaics. Analysts predict that by 2020 100 percent of the multi-crystalline silicon market will be black silicon. While black silicon can increase solar cell efficiency and reduce processing costs, the main driver for converting cell manufacturing lines to black silicon is that the process works well on a lower-cost wafers known as diamond wire sawn wafers, Black says.Another emerging black silicon market is batteries. Lithium ions are easily inserted into silicon nanowires, without compromising structural integrity and electrical connectivity. Those qualities makes these doped nanowires a possible candidate for high capacity/low fade anodes for lithium ion batteries.Nanowires can also be highly sensitive detectors of biomarkers, but tr aditional processes for fabrication are expensive and produce devices with only a handful of nanowires to accomplish the detection.Using black silicon, Advanced Silicon Group can produce devices with millions of nanowires inexpensively, making it possible to manufacture highly sensitive detectors of multiple biomarkers on a single chip. The high surface area to volume ratio of the nanowires enables more sensitive detection. We can make use of semiconductor technology and pack many different biomarker tests onto a single chip, Black says. Our long-term vision is to make low-cost, less-invasive sensing so that people can monitor their health on a regular basis.Mark Crawford is an independent writer. For Further Discussion Black silicon nanotextures are preferred for their antireflection properties, since they provide low reflection over a wide range of incident angles and wavelengths of light.Marcie R. Black, co-founder and CEO, Advanced Silicon Group

6 Networking Strategies to Build an Influential Network

6 Networking Strategies to Build an Influential Network 6 Networking Strategies to Build an Influential Network Building a robust network takes effort, but it may be the best thing you’ll ever do for your career. Forming relationships with a variety of people expands possibilities by exposing you to new ideas and opportunities. If you’re ready to strengthen your network, here are six networking strategies. Check out these six networking strategies to build an influential network: 1. Say “yes.” Potentially valuable connections are everywhere, but you won’t find them if you constantly turn down invitations. Expand your horizons by putting yourself out there. Go to that neighborhood block party or college alumni weekend. Attend your professional association’s monthly guest lecture series. Your odds of finding exciting additions to your network grow with every RSVP. 2.  Take a chance. While not every person you’d like to connect with will be gracious with his time, muster your courage to make the first move. You may be pleasantly surprised when a high-level exec grants your request for an informational interview or that speaker whose presentation you enjoyed chats for 10 minutes after approaching her with a sincere compliment. 3. Seek diversity. Peers in your same industry or age range certainly have a place in your network, but they shouldn’t be all of it. Make a pointed effort to push beyond your comfort zone to meet people who aren’t just like you. “Generational intelligence and network diversity are key to gaining rich and varied perspectives and in building a truly strong network,” says Patti DeNucci, author of  The Intentional Networker: Attracting Powerful Relationships, Referrals Results in Business. “Try being with people who are 5, 10, 15, or even 20 years ahead on the career path. Talk to and get to know people doing a wide range of jobs and having a wide range of experiences. It’s how you know where you want to be.” 4. Know your network’s network. A quick way to expand your network is to ask people already in it for introductions to those in their circle. Assistance from a mutual acquaintance can make breaking the ice a less daunting task. Use LinkedIn to discover connections, or ask your contacts to pick their brains for individuals they think would be beneficial for you to meet. 5. Follow up. Meeting someone once does not constitute a true relationship. You must take action to stay top of mind if you hope to develop the kind of association that leads to results. Silence until you need a favor doesn’t work; building trust over time does. 6. Reciprocate. Finally, always remember that networking is a two-way street. Be alert to ways to build goodwill. Pass along articles of interest. Arrange introductions. Invite someone to lunch. Congratulate on achievements. Express interest in their research. Comment on their posts. People forming bonds and genuinely wanting to assist one another is the heart of networking. Looking for more advice on networking? Check out our networking tips category. Do You Still Need a Paper Resume

Do You Still Need a Paper Resume Do You Still Need a Paper Resume In today’s tech-driven times, carrying around paper resumes to in-person interviews may appear to be passé- but you might be surprised at the importance of having them with you for a job interview. Read the pros of having paper copies of your resume to decide if you really need them or not. The pros of bringing a paper resume to your next in-person job interview: You can reference it easily. You might already be a bit nervous when you sit down in front of a potential employer. So when he asks you a question regarding a previous date of employment, you suddenly draw a blank. If you have a paper copy of your resume, though, you can easily use it as a reference sheet to answer any questions quickly and correctly. Your interviewer might not have a copy. Sure, you submitted your job application electronically, but that doesn’t mean that your future employer will have it in front of him during your interview. He might lose your resume, forget to print it out, or even accidentally delete your application altogether. If he asks for a paper resume copy, it’s better to have one on hand. If you don’t, it could make you look unprepared or even possibly cut the interview short. You might need to give it to more than one person. You were originally set to interview with only the HR manager, but after an amazing interview, he wants to take you on an impromptu meet-and-greet with some department heads. After chatting with some of the staffers, they might ask you for a copy of your resume to review, too. Have a few handy to give out, and let them know that they can reach out to you with any questions they might have. It puts you front and center on the interviewers desk- and mind. Although your interviewer might have your resume on his screen during your interview, having a copy of your paper resume on his desk means that he’s bound to see it more than once. Offering a paper copy of your resume could be a subtle job seeker tactic to keep you front and center in your interviewer’s mind- and on his desk- allowing him to review your application and give you more consideration for the position.

5 Ways to Find Success at Work, According to Dirty Jobs Mike Rowe

5 Ways to Find Success at Work, According to Dirty Jobs Mike Rowe 5 Ways to Find Success at Work, According to Dirty Jobs Mike Rowe TV host Mike Rowe has made a career bringing “dirty jobs” to light. By getting down and, well, dirty on the job, he’s learned what motivates people to do some of the most undesirable jobs out there. (Think roadkill collector, septic tank cleaner, and fish processor.) Now you can find him on CNN for his series Somebody’s Gotta Do It, Sundays at 10 PM ET/PT. And along the way, he’s picked up a few lessons on succeeding in the workplace that everyone can embrace- whether your current position requires a hazmat suit or just an extra sweater because the AC is always on. 1. Dream Jobs Are Dreams Rowe says we’ve been sold a little white lie. We think that in order to be satisfied at work, we think we need to find the right job. “That's a fundamental mistake,” he says. “What we’re really looking for is meaningful work. Once we can accept that, we can move toward finding something that pays us what we need and gives us the opportunity to engage.” So, the trick’s not necessarily following your dream, but finding out what kind of work will actually be fulfilling to you. By looking at it this way, you’re opening up lots of options. If Rowe followed his dreams, he would’ve followed in his grandfather’s footsteps- a plumber and steamfitter who could have built a house without a blueprint. He had that kind of talent and instinct, according to Rowe. Realizing he wasn’t very good at it forced Rowe to find happiness where he landed. And that, as we know, led to great success! 2. Lower Your Expectations “There’s a reason why, statistically speaking, couples in arranged marriages are happier than those who have chosen their own mate for love.” This is a concept outlined by Barry Schwartz in his book of the same name. “The more choices there are, the more you expect to find a perfect fit; yet, at the same time, the larger the array, the less likely it becomes that you picked the best item.” Rowe says it’s the same with careers. You expect that picking the right partner- or the right car, or the right job- will make you happy. “If you don’t expect any more from the job than the paycheck, the odds of finding satisfaction go up. Job satisfaction has nothing to do with the job.” We’re not advising you to accept poor working conditions or bad treatment. But take a look at your situation and ask yourself if you’re waiting for your dream job to come along, or if you can find something worthwhile in your current position. If you keep pining for a job that’ll fulfill everything you want in a career, you’re never going to find it. 3. Take the Road Less Traveled “Spend the first year of your job making your boss look smart. Volunteer for the work that no one else wants to do.” Rowe says that finding the sweet spot where no one else really wants to be could be the ticket to success. This is how the people who repel deep into faults in the earth searching for opal in Australia end up finding fulfillment and success. They do what no one else wants to do. And there’s a sense of pride in just that. Don’t take yourself or what you thought you would be doing so seriously. Be willing to be flexible with your vision. “Look around. See where everyone is going. If you go the opposite direction, you increase your odds of finding an opportunity.” 4. Know Your Value- Even if Others Don’t You might never be appreciated as much as you should be, even if you’re saving lives. Rowe explains, “Septic tank cleaners know that society goes off the rails without them. But, they also know people don’t think twice about their work. That can either make you angry or bitter, or it can make you bemused or philosophical.” You need to realize and appreciate your own contributions. You have a unique talent and are serving a purpose in your position within your company- and it’s up to you to connect with that, even when you feel unrecognized. 5. Do Your Best (No, Really, Do Your Best) “There are no shortcuts, ever. Show up early. Stay late.” Take your job seriously, regardless of your perceptions of how “important” it is. Rowe’s CNN show Somebody’s Gotta Do It profiles Dude Perfect, five friends from Texas AM who started filming each other making trick basketballs shots. Because they took what might have been a fun, yet insignificant, pastime extremely seriously, they now have a huge following and a huge business. Based on his time with Dude Perfect, Rowe says, “This is what happens when someone approaches a task that seems inconsequential with excellence.” “The real secret of success is that there is no secret,” Rowe says, “It’s all been said. But the people who truly embrace it and take responsibility for their actions and take responsibility for their performance are the ones who get the opportunities and are the ones who will succeed.” What have you learned from the hardest working people in your life? What’s your favorite old-school work value? Tweet me and let me know. Find Mike Rowe on CNN for the return of his series Somebody’s Gotta Do It, Sundays at 10 PM ET/PT. Job Application Checklist for the Recent Grad

Job Application Checklist for the Recent Grad Job Application Checklist for the Recent Grad Follow these best practices to ensure your job application bypasses the job-search black hole. Now that you’ve clarified your   job goals, crafted the perfect   resume  and cleaned up your   online presence, let’s talk about submitting effective job applications. There’s nothing worse than submitting an application and never hearing back. Below are ten tips to help you avoid that job-search black hole.Make Sure You’re a MatchRead the responsibilities and requirements sections of the job description carefully â€" what skill sets, education level and years of experience do they require? While the employer likely doesn’t expect you to have every single desired skill, they will expect you to meet all the core “must-have” requirements. Only apply to jobs where you possess these must-haves.Apply Within 72 HoursA recent study by Ladders found that your chances of getting a call back plummet 72 hours after the job is published online, even if you were considered a good fit for t he job. If you find a job that you’re truly interested in and a fit for, buckle down and get that application out as soon as possible!Tailor Your ApplicationBefore your resume is reviewed by a recruiter or hiring manager, it first has to get past an electronic gatekeeper called Applicant Tracking Software (called ATS for short). Before you submit your application, review the job description for key terms and requirements and make sure they are incorporated into your resume (assuming you possess those skills).Customize Your Cover LetterA good cover letter fits on one page and is broken down into three main sections: an introductory paragraph that explains why you’re interested in the job, a middle section that explains your qualifications and a closing paragraph that ends with a call to action. I recommend using a t-format for your cover letter to quickly show the reader how you meet the core requirements for the role. If the application doesn’t allow you to use columns, try bu llets instead.Remember, It’s Not About YouWhen you’re a job seeker, your mission is to show organizations how you can provide value to them. A hiring manager doesn’t care that you’re applying for your dream job with your dream company. Rather, they want to know why you’re interested in and passionate about working there. Focus on the skills and passions that are required to do the job.Cross Your T’s and Dot Your I’sIf 54 percent of recruiters have reacted negatively to spelling and grammatical errors found in candidates’ tweets and Facebook posts, imagine how they’ll react to mistakes in your application! Beyond proper etiquette, poor punctuation and capitalization can confuse the ATS software and scramble your application in the system. What Barbie Can Teach Us About Careers

What Barbie Can Teach Us About Careers What Barbie Can Teach Us About Careers The term career is often associated with desks, offices, filing cabinets and secretaries. Careers are synonymous with the proverbial desk job, complete with a watch at retirement. But that isnt always the case. There are a great many people who do bizarre, interesting, exciting things for a living. In real life and in popular culture we have a few individuals who time and time again land exceptionally fascinating jobs. One such character is Barbie, the iconic doll. Over the years she has developed quite a diverse resume. Here are some of Barbies best and most interesting jobs. Ocean Treasure Explorer Of all the job titles Barbie has held, this is by far the most interesting. Ocean Treasure Explorer Barbie came complete with scuba diving equipment and a reef to explore.  Normally when we publish job lists we provide a link to the job listings. Unfortunately, Simply Hired doesnt have a single ocean treasure explorer job in its database.  This is a career you happen on your own, and Barbie knows this. Photographer   Photographer Barbie comes complete with a tripod and camera equipment. Photographer Barbie is specifically a fashion photographer, but with the skill set and equipment Barbie should be able to take on a host of different photography gigs.  Maybe even underwater photography. Average salary: $30,000 per year Chef Chef Barbie has cooked in a variety of different niches. Shes been a pastry chef, a pizza chef, a pancake chef, etc. Each of the chef Barbies comes with a kitchen appliance, utensils and some food. Of the various career Barbies, working as a chef has been one of her top occupations. Average salary: $40,000 per year Pilot Male pilots are more common, and Pilot Barbie set out to change that. Although pilot Barbie doesnt include an airplane for her to fly, she does have a traditional captains uniform and rollaway suitcase. Of course pilot isnt the only job Barbie has taken in the skies. Shes also spent some time as a flight attendant. Average salary: $61,000 per year Astronaut Barbie has been to space! Maybe not literally, but she has worked as an astronaut for years. At times her space uniform was a bit silly. There was a point where she was wearing a pink space suit. However, more recently Barbie has decided to go more traditional. Today she can be seen wearing a white NASA-style space suit. Surgeon Of course Barbie spent some time working in the medical field, both as a nurse and a doctor. But back in the 1970s Barbie also spent some time as a surgeon. Costuming wasnt so exciting for this Barbie though, just the simple blue or green scrubs. Unfortunately she also lacks any serious surgical instruments or someone to operate on. Average salary: $99,000 per year Yoga Teacher Although always a big advocate for fitness, Barbie had not spent time working in yoga. That all changed in 2012. Although Yoga Teacher Barbie is not extra bendy, she does come with a yoga mat and little dog. Average salary: $42,000 per year Paleontologist Little kids love dinosaurs. So it was only a matter of time before Mattel figured out that of all the advanced science jobs, paleontologist is the only ones kids know by name.  Thus Barbie spends some time digging up dinosaurs. Average salary: $33,000 per year As you consider possible directions you can take in your own career, grab some inspiration from Barbie and remember the sky (or the ocean) is the limit!

What Job Site Reigns Supreme Simply Hired vs Glass Door

What Job Site Reigns Supreme Simply Hired vs Glass Door What Job Site Reigns Supreme Simply Hired vs Glass Door When it comes to hunting for open positions on the job market, today’s candidates have never had it so good in terms of options and access to quality positions.  Long gone are the days when companies big and small hired through word of mouth or “help wanted” signs hung auspiciously in office windows.   All today’s modern job-seeker need do is boot up a computer and they have an entire internets worth of virtual classifieds at their fingertips.  From Craigslist to Careebuilder, each website has its own unique plusses and minuses for those looking to make a career move.  The options, in fact, can seem overwhelming to candidates who are short on time and looking for the most efficient method for hunting down the job of their dreams.   If you fall into that category, well, you’re in luck!  Here we break down the similarities and differences between Simply Hired and Glass Door, two of the biggest names in virtual job searches.  Curious to see where your favorite lands on our sliding scale of supremacy?  Read on! It’s All a Matter of Perspective Before we delve too deeply into a point by point comparison of SimplyHired.com vs GlassDoor.com, its important to understand the motivations and purpose of each company.  Simply Hired was founded in the early 2000’s as a job aggregator site.  This means that prospective employees could type in a few search terms on SimplyHired.com and return a wealth of listings that had been collected from all of the other major player’s websites, including direct company listings.   In addition to searching, users could also create a free account, select a few criteria, and sign up for daily email notifications in which dozens of newly found jobs would be delivered directly to the potential applicant’s mailbox before you’d even had a chance to brew up that morning pot of coffee. Glass Door’s founding looks a little different.  The younger of the two companies by far, GlassDoor.com was started as a research resource for current employees and prospective job seekers.  By searching Glass Door’s website you could get the lowdown on corporate culture, average salary and reviews of real-life employees.  Sure, your search results were limited unless you signed up for an account and then filled out your own review or two, but it was still a tangible resource for those looking for insider information before this type of data was more commonly available.  The other downside to Glass Door’s service was that entries were not independently verified, making for a definite buyer beware scenario. Who’s got the Bigger (Employment) Muscles Glass Door has recently entered the job listing game, now allowing companies and individuals to post listings direct to its site.  While there’s plenty of knowledge and research on companies still available, the job listings fall behind in both numbers and recent activity, making it difficult at times to determine whether a given position is still open.   Simply Hired, on the other hand, has only perfected its aggregator software and criteria over the years, helping the site to become one of the largest databases of active jobs available.  In addition, SimplyHired provides valuable tools and resources such as its popular salary calculator feature, allowing job-seekers to know if their salary requirements are hitting the mark with other potential applicants. Overall, the stats line up in favor of SimplyHired over GlassDoor for applicants in need of a single, efficient platform for finding that job of their dreams.  With a higher number of quality listings and tools catered specifically to perusing the employment market, Simplyhired.com will save users time and effort and will help get their resumes into the hands of the largest amount of potential employers available.

Henry R Worthington

Henry R Worthington Henry R Worthington Henry R. Worthington With no more formal education than from the New York City public schools, Henry R. Worthington (1817 1880) became a highly regarded professional mechanical engineer from on-the-job training and practical experience. In fact, after a number of working years, that career preparation made him increasingly aware of the need for individuals to have formal training. He joined other concerned professionals in the 1850s to establish the Brooklyn Collegiate Polytechnic Institute and served on its first board of trustees. Among his accomplishments as an engineer were the development of improved steam-driven, direct-acting pumps for steam-powered vessels, and one of the first practical water meters. He was one of the founding members of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Henry Rossiter Worthington was born in 1817 in Brooklyn, NY, to a family that had been part of America since the 17th century. His father Asa Worthington, a millwright, had expected his oldest son to take over the family business of building and maintaining machinery. As Henry reached adulthood, he had other ideas. The U.S. was still very much an agricultural nation with most manufacturing taking place along the Eastern Seaboard, and transportation was an up-and-coming field. When the state of New York issued a call to inventors and engineers to come up with a steam canal boat for the Erie Canal, which had been using mules and horses to pull barges since its opening 15 years earlier, Worthington was up for the challenge. New York state officials saw this as a way to promote more traffic and expand manufacturing to other regions. With his fathers blessing and financial backing, Worthington began at age 23 to study the problem. Boilers on steam-powered vessels of that time had to be continuously replenished with water, and the pumps to do so were driven directly by the engine. However, often the boat was not in motion and the engines were idle; for instance whenever the boat passed through canal locks, the engine was turned off, and the water level in the boiler dropped. It could be replenished only by a hand pump. This was not only a tedious procedure but also kept the crew from performing other duties on the boat. Worthington developed a different method, a steam-driven feed pump that was direct-acting, in other words, one that operated independently and automatically from the engine. The barge he developed was lauded by the state, but for political reasons, canal traffic returned to using mules and horses. According to a biography of Worthington by Clarence E. Searle, a president of the Worthington Pump Machinery Co. in the 1940s, if the New York legislature had not rejected Worthingtons boat, the Worthington name might have been limited to an association with a single field: boats. The rejection encouraged Worthington to continue working on his pump, and in 1845, he joined with William H. Baker to found Worthington Baker to manufacture the pump. The company made its first sales of Worthington pumps to the U.S. Navy in 1850 for the USS Susquehanna, the first Navy ship to be named for a river. In addition to merchant and navy vessels, the pump was also sold for use in hotels, factories, mines, and quarries. During that decade, his company expanded into producing pumps for municipalities, including the city of Savannah, GA, and in 1855, Worthington patented and began manufacturing a water meter. Continuing to work on improving pumps, Worthington developed designs for other applications, such as boiler feed, oil pipeline, and hydro-electric uses. In 1857, he came up with a duplex direct-acting pump, considered the most significant development in steam-powered pumps at the time and one that became a widely used means for handling municipal water by steam power. In the next two decades, some 80 municipalities in the U.S. were using it in their waterworks operations. These pumps because of reliability and low operating cost were used for many decades in waterworks and for pumping oil through long pipe lines in oil fields. A member of a number of professional organizations, Worthington declined an offer of the presidency of ASME but did accept the vice presidency in 1880, eight months before he died in December. In 1980, Worthington Pump established the Henry R. Worthington Medal to recognize eminent achievement in the field of pumping machinery, systems and concepts. Nancy Giges is an independent writer. In 1857, [Henry Worthington] came up with a duplex direct-acting pump, considered the most significant development in steam-powered pumps at the time.
